The classical guitar community in Shillong is growing slowly. Once a month, they play for each other. It started in February with three people – Lenny Phewar and two of his students. In May there were eight. They meet in one of the classrooms of the Jeebon Roy Creative Art Akademi. The chairs and tables are moved aside to allow for a small concert and rearranged once again after the concert is over. Everyone attending has to perform a piece. There is no audience, but they’re growing slowly and Lenny feels that in the months to come, they’ll start inviting people to sit in and listen. These concerts are inspired by the monthly concerts of the Bangalore School of Music. Kamlesh Khundrakpam was there a few years ago and saw the benefit of playing for an audience once a month: it helps get over performance anxiety and with practise – you have to prepare a piece for performance each month.
